Using The Guide

While an unprecedented number of patients in the state of Colorado now have access to medical marijuana, few have experience with the cultivation and dealing with common pests. A vast majority of cannabis sold in Medical Marijuana Centers has gone through a rigorous inspection process to protect patients from the potential harms that mold, mildew and pests can pose.

This guide is intended to educate patients on ways to identify potential issues without the use of magnifying glasses or expensive microscopes. A well trained eye or nose can spot most damage on the spot.

If you believe you have purchased cannabis that has one of these issues, we suggest that you immediately contact the center from which it was purchased so they can pull any tainted product from their shelves and contact other patients that may be affected. It can also be helpful to take pictures that identify areas you’re concerned with.

The Three M’s

Mold:

Botrytis, gray mold, necrotrophic fungus, bud mold… one of the nastiest problems with cannabis goes by many names.  Fortunately, it’s also one of the easiest to identify.

Mold is generally a result of improper humidity levels during the growing or curing stages of processing. Buds with mold present generally lack a strong nose and will remind you more of an old basement than cannabis. Since mold is present where moisture is trapped, you will need to inspect the center of the bud near the stem. For this reason, larger or dense buds are often more prone.

Mold will often cause discoloration

Mildew:

Powdery mildew (PM) occurs during the cultivation stage and generally attacks the leaves of a plant. It can be difficult to spot as PM appears very similar to trichomes, the wax-like structures on cannabis that give it a “dusted” appearance.

PM will generally look whiter than a trichome and is fuzzier, as opposed to the elongated structure with tiny heads. It will also be concentrated on the leaves, so make sure to give extra inspection to buds with an extremely tight trim.

Mites:

Spider mites are one of the hardest issues to spot on a finished bud because of their small size. As they feed on plants, discoloration will become evident on the leaves. Dead mites will appear either black or red and small black specks of fecal matter may be present. You may also notice that there will be a crackling or popping noise if you’re smoking.

Why Does My MMJ Sometimes Snap, Crackle and/or Pop?

Point of Information: the medicine sold at The Releaf Center, as well as myriad other dispensaries in Denver, does not generally “snap, crackle, and/or pop” upon combustion – that being said, I recently tried an 1/8 of Purple Diesel from another local shop and the intimate session that I fantasized about as I cruised down Colfax towards home was greater than the real thing; smoking was reminiscent of watching fireworks on New Years Eve…

…but assume for a second that you’re utterly alone, piss drunk and you’ve cried yourself into dehydration (and the onset of a nasty rash).  Badmouthing specific industry fellows is bad karma, though – that’s not how we roll here at TRC.

On to the heart of the matter…

Marijuana in a pipe or a joint, for instance, may ‘snap’ or ‘pop’ or ‘crackle’ upon combustion for any number of reasons, but a standard rule of thumb is that it’s not happening for a good reason.

Unless you want to invite me over to your place to test your meds, it would seem impossible for me to tell the actual cause from behind this desk.

Please feel free to contact me if you have other possible causes, but I’d bet that at least one of the following is the culprit:

  • POOR FLUSHING – if the grower skipped the foreplay and went right for her fruits… chemicals might not have been removed from the plant matter
  • LACK OF NUTRIENTS – it takes more than a seed, some light, and water to grow a serviceable plant; fail to feed it and watch it wither away
  • INFESTATION OF BUGS/DISEASE – lice, flies, spiders, molds, mildew, etc.
  • RESIN – your pipe may have residue from the last time you smoked inferior/tainted buds out of it
  • DRYNESS – the herb could be so dry that it could spark up… like a sparkler – Happy New Year to all, btw.
  • PRESENCE OF SEEDS  - which may or may not be fully developed (ie: visible)… and we’ve all heard the One about how smoking seeds causes sterility, yes?  I can’t wait for that clinical trial to start… c’mon, Johns Hopkins, Bill Gates, or some cool-ass lab in Switzerland that’s nestled up in the Alps like in a James Bond flick- pick up your Game(s) and solve the riddle… and possibly save Mankind!
