Smoking Hot News – 3/1/10

Well, the day has finally arrived: Denver’s MMJ ordinance is in full effect.  We’re licensed and ready to go, but patients should know that it is now illegal to medicate on site at any dispensary.  On to some news:

  • As the deadline passed, only 235 MMJ businesses had their applications in.  There were nearly 500 applications for sales tax licenses.
  • The head of the CCPC (not CPPC, which is now the CMMR) is going to be pissed if any dispensaries get shut down for non compliance with the new ordinance.
  • Denver prosecutions for marijuana possession are just as high as they ever were, despite the fact it has been decriminilized in the city.  City attorneys are saying they’re simply following state law.
  • Get to know Westword bud reviewer William Breathes a little better.
  • Andrew Romanoff, former CO Speaker of the House, wants the Feds to get their story straight about MMJ and how states can be in compliance.
  • A Colorado Christian has no patience for the DEA and wonders why exactly marijuana is a Schedule 1 narcotic.
  • The El Paso County D.A. is trying to get his local dispensary shut down, pulling strings to make it happen.  Good luck, Pure Medical.
  • An attempted burglary goes all wrong when the moron breaks into the wrong building.

Smoking Hot News – 02/03/10

It’s a big news day, with Rep. Massey’s bill dropping this afternoon.  Check back for updates, but here are some links to get you started with your day:

  • UPDATE (4:40PM): The full bill has been announced and is available online.  Joe Tone of Westword offers his summary of the bill and reaction from both sides.  We’re reading it right now and will have some comments of our own up shortly.
  • UPDATE (1:29PM): Brian Vincente of Sensible Colorado added his two cents in the form of a ballot initiative that is pro-dispensary.  Word on the new bill is due in a few minutes.
  • The second state bill on MMJ regulation will be released today, but Westword has a source that offers a sneak peak.  Amongst the big changes: a one year “time out”, a shift towards clinics instead of dispensaries, and new advertising rules.
  • Wells Fargo will no longer accept new applications from dispensaries.  They are the bank of choice for many shops, mainly because no one else will take their money.
  • Matt Brown of Coloradans for Medical Marijuana Regulation has penned a great piece on the medical side of medicinal marijuana.  He also adds his take on the newest regulations.  He’s a busy guy.
  • Canon City may approve a moratorium on dispensaries tonight.  They’re looking for guidance from the legislature before moving forward.
  • If you’re a military veteran and have used MMJ, a new study offers you a chance to win some gift certificates by answering questions about your experience. (via NORML Blog)
  • A California MMJ patient was detained on a plane after dropping his pants and attacking a flight crew.  He blames a medicated cookie he ingested.  Riiiight.
